AMERICA’S CHILD
I overheard Mommy say
As she spoke on the phone today,
My Daddy can’t see me til Friday.
He has to stay away.
He better work night and day;
He’s no good and he should pay.
What did I do wrong for the Judgeman to say
I can't see Daddy today; he sent Daddy away?
Me and Daddy love to play.
I miss Daddy, I’m afraid to say;
Cause Mommy doesn’t like it
When I talk this way.
Daddy, Oh Daddy where are you?
I don’t care bout money due.
I don’t want to play without you,
Cause the sky’s not blue
And the sun’s not bright without you.
I love you Daddy and you love me too.
Mommy said you can’t see me tomorrow;
Or maybe, if you find more money to borrow.
You can do it Daddy, you’re my hero!
Oh, I know, I’ll pray before I get in bed.
I'll keel down and bow my head
And close my eyes like Daddy said.
Dear God, please help the Judgeman
Cause he cannot understand like I can;
My Daddy is more than just a man.
Time for sleep Mommy said;
It’s not fun anymore to go to bed—
No Daddy’s kiss on my forehead.
No Daddy bedtime story to dream tonight.
I whisper real quiet every night,
I love you Daddy, goodnight.
